Forest Discovery Day at Wendover Woods

Today was a lovely sunny spring day, so Bug Mad Girl and I went to Wendover Woods to have a look at their Forest Discovery Day. Wendover Woods is a 325 ha woodland owned and managed by the Forestry Commission. Today we had a chance to visit stalls run by several local organisations connected to the woods, see some woodland activities in progress as well as enjoy some of the trails through the woods and the stunning views.
Beautiful setting in the woods
A beautiful view out over the Chilterns
The stalls were in a stunning setting in the woods, with a fabulous view out over the Chilterns. We walked around and had a look at the displays and had a go at their quizzes. At the Chiltern Society we had to match plants and animals to their descriptions. They said BMG was the quickest to complete it so far that day and she won an easter egg for her efforts!

At BBOWT we had to guess which local creatures skull we were looking at. A bit more tricky, but we got them in the end, with a bit of help! They seemed surprised the BMG could get so many of them. From the top left to bottom right, they were roe deer, muntjac, fox, badger, squirrel, rabbit, owl, woodcock and woodpigeon.

At the Forestry Commission we had to guess which tree a set of different twigs belonged to. It was really tricky and we only got 4 out of 6 right. Then we had a look at the stand for the Natural History Museum at Tring. They had a selection of local 'stuffed' wildlife and we met our old friend the stuffed glis glis again.

Then we had a look around the forest crafts and activities. They had somebody carving a bench out of tree trunk using a chainsaw, a mobile sawmill and horse logging.

Taking a well deserved rest

It was very interesting, in a stunning location and a beautiful day!

On the way home we stopped off at Aston Clinton Ragpits for a quick look round, but more of that in a new post tomorrow...
